The 2026 NIDA-NIAAA Frontiers in Addiction Research Symposium is an annual collaborative event hosted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Neuroscience Workgroup. This year’s Symposium will take place on November 13, 2026, in Washington, D.C., in conjunction with the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) annual meeting. The Symposium serves as a dynamic forum for presenting and discussing cutting-edge topics in neuroscience and addiction research. The program features scientific sessions highlighting areas of emerging or significant scientific interest, emphasizing innovative research strategies and the latest technological advances, and fostering critical dialogue on the implications of new findings across the fields of substance use and addiction.

2026 Scientific Sessions will feature topics including:

  • Across Scales and Substances: Mechanisms, Computational Models, and Trajectories
  • Modulating the Addicted Brain: New Frontiers in Treatment
  • New resources and toolkits from the BRAIN Initiative for the Addiction Neuroscience Research Community

A highlight of the Symposium is the presentation of the Jacob P. Waletzky Memorial Award Lecture by the 2026 award recipient. This prestigious award recognizes a young investigator whose independent research has significantly advanced the understanding of drug addiction.

The Symposium will also feature the Early Career Investigator Showcase (ECIS), showcasing exceptional early-stage and junior investigators advancing innovative research in alcohol and substance use disorder research.
