NEW Online Courses: Incident Command System for Schools and Human Error in Schools

The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe and Supportive Schools and its REMS TA Center have developed two NEW online courses, titled Implementing the Incident Command System (ICS) for Schools and Human Error and School Safety: Risks That Compromise Safety Plans. These 60- to 90-minute free online courses are designed for school administrators, faculty, and personnel at K-12 schools and school districts as well as state, regional, and community partners who have a role or responsibility in emergency management planning. At the end of each course, you will be able to print a certificate of completion.

The ICS online course explores the 14 characteristics of ICS and how they can augment existing emergency operations plans (EOPs). Learn how ICS principles and characteristics can help you create and communicate Incident Action Plans, work more efficiently with community partners during emergencies, and organize your school’s emergency resources more effectively. Modules within this course are as follows: 1) course overview and introduction to ICS, 2) command, 3) communication, 4) resource management, and 5) final scenario and course closure.

The Human Error online course explains how various forms of human error appear in school settings. Learn how you can anticipate and mitigate emergencies that stem from human error by improving your school climate and developing human error awareness training sessions for school employees. Modules within this course are as follows: 1) course overview and introduction to human error, 2) categories of human error, 3) learning to think differently, and 4) predicting and anticipating human error.

The REMS TA Center offers a diverse set of self-paced online courses as asynchronous training and professional development opportunities on EOP topics. If you are a first-time user, create a profile for easy access to all 17 of our online courses. Our courses cover K-12 planning basics and principles, such as After-Action Reviews and Reports, Memoranda of Understanding, Site Assessments, Developing Emergency Operations Plans 101, and Large Events. They also explore K-12 emergency management functions that apply to a range of emergencies, such as Recovery, Family Reunification, Bereavement and Loss, and Continuity of Operations. Other courses examine K-12 adversarial and human-caused threats, such as Cybersecurity and Adult Sexual Misconduct; K-12 biological hazards, such as Food Contamination and Infectious Diseases; and K-12 natural hazards, such as Earthquakes. The REMS TA Center offers one online course for higher ed on Developing Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs) IHE 101.

The REMS TA Center provides additional resources on these topics. The National Incident Management System web page contains information and resources on ICS, command communication, and resource management. The REMS TA Center hosted a podcast episode on human error and school safety. Finally, the Emergency Exercises Training Package contains a tabletop exercise on human error that may be used to practice an EOP. More resources on both ICS and human error can be found on the Enhancing School and Higher Ed Safety Leadership Capabilities web page.
