New Downloadable Training Module: Building Multidisciplinary Core Planning Teams

Multidisciplinary planning teams are foundational for the development and maintenance of high-quality school emergency operations plans (EOPs). Lessons learned have indicated that planning is best performed by a collaborative team that is representative of school and school district personnel and community partners. Today’s modern schools are so diverse and complex that one or two individuals will not have the expertise to plan for all aspects of emergencies. Furthermore, buy-in and support comes from being involved in the planning process, which facilitates a full understanding and appreciation for addressing threats and hazards. The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe and Supportive Schools and its REMS TA Center are pleased to provide a NEW, downloadable training module for K-12 school safety teams, leaders, and trainers at public and nonpublic schools, school districts, regional/state education agencies, and partner agencies to use on the topic of building multidisciplinary core planning teams. This module and its materials are intended for you to use to deliver in-person or online trainings to your colleagues and/or site and to support your training programs.

Goals and Objectives
The goal of this 75-minute training module is to provide educators and school staff with a better understanding of the formation of a collaborative planning team that is representative of school and school district personnel and community partners. The training provides a brief overview of the recommended six-step planning process for school EOP development, highlights the variety of roles that should be included on school or school district core planning teams and their value, discusses strategies for strengthening partnerships and collaborations with community partners and other members of the core and ad-hoc planning teams, and reinforces the value of collaboration and leadership buy-in to ensure that EOPs are developed with equity and the whole school community in mind. This module consists of the following materials:

  • Presentation with speaker notes for school safety teams and practitioners to use to deliver trainings to the whole school community or learn on their own.
  • Training instructions to help you deliver this module to your colleagues.
  • Resource list for additional information and resources related to the topic.
