FREE Virtual Trainings and Modules
Training and exercise programs are critical components of emergency management planning. The REMS TA Center recognizes that, in light of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, most training and exercises are being conducted virtually. We are happy to connect K-12 schools and school districts, institutions of higher education (IHEs), state education agencies, regional education agencies, and community partners with our FREE resources to assist you with your training and exercise efforts now and in the future. Topics range from developing comprehensive emergency operations plans with specific annexes (e.g., continuity of operations, recovery) to planning for specific emergency events (e.g., infectious disease, food contamination) to integrating assessments (e.g., behavioral threat, site) in your preparedness efforts. Modalities include the following:
- Online Courses — self-paced virtual trainings that generate certificates upon completion;
- Webinars — archived virtual trainings with subject matter experts;
- Virtual Trainings by Request — interactive and dynamic virtual trainings delivered to your education agency by REMS TA Center’s trainers, available by request; and
- Specialized Training Packages (K-12 only) — materials for school safety teams or school safety leaders to use to learn on their own or deliver trainings to colleagues and their sites.
Online Courses
Course participants can take notes and download job aids, checklists, and reference guides as they navigate through modules. The duration of each course is 30 to 45 minutes. At the conclusion of each of our online courses, participants receive a certificate of completion. Your education agency can use this certificate to keep track of staff capacity and meeting continuing education units or other training requirements, if applicable. You are encouraged to send our online courses to your colleagues to complete, as well as post them to your agency’s Website. Webinars
We host live Webinars throughout the year with audio- and video-enabled presentations from experts in the field. Ranging from 60 to 90 minutes in length, these virtual trainings are archived on the REMS TA Center’s Website for viewing on demand. Our collection currently boasts 58 archived Webinars and is filterable via a built-in search engine. You may use a virtual training strategy of integrating these archived Webinars in your education agency’s professional development program or posting these trainings to your agency’s Website. Resources and a handout of the presentation are available for each Webinar.
Virtual Trainings By Request (VTBRs)
Submit your application to host these interactive curricula for your team, which vary in length from 2 to 4 hours. VTBRs are led by the REMS TA Center team and our cadre of highly qualified subject matter experts, who come equipped with hands-on knowledge of emergency preparedness principles and practices in the educational setting. To support learning before and after the event, each interactive VTBR also features pre- and post-training activities that enhance professional development efforts, build individual preparedness capacity, and support education agencies in bridging training and practice. All VTBRs feature interactive polls, breakout rooms, and chat-based discussions to enhance the learning process. As a virtual training strategy, it is possible to host more than one training topic across multiple days. For example, if you are requesting a Train-the-Trainer training, we encourage you to host a Train-the-Educator training on a subsequent day, or if you are hosting a specific training topic, another complementary training topic can be presented on the following day in an effort to increase the impartation of knowledge and to help build capacity in both of the training topics.
Specialized Downloadable Training Packages — K-12 only
We created these Specialized Training Packages to support YOU with your online training efforts and to supplement your training programs. These packages are intended for you to use to train your teams and contain training presentations with speakers’ notes, instructions, resource lists, and, in some cases, tabletop exercises. Download a package, and use its materials to deliver in-person or online trainings to your colleagues on a variety of school emergency management topics. Or you may review these materials on your own to learn more about a topic. We currently offer training packages on over 13 topics available for download. You can use a virtual training strategy of integrating modules into your professional development meetings or days and using the time that is already set aside to build the school community’s preparedness capacity. Or if you are planning a virtual or in-person conference, you can set aside an hour or two for a special session and you already have the materials to deliver it! You can also send out the training package to your colleagues or staff and mandate or ask them to complete and review the training on their own. Furthermore, if you want to host a Webinar on one of the topics we cover, you won’t need to recreate the wheel! Just integrate our materials into your presentation.
