Download and Share NEW Fact Sheets on Five Preparedness Mission Areas

The Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools (REMS) Technical Assistance (TA) Center is pleased to announce the release of five fact sheets for schools (public and nonpublic) on the five national preparedness mission areas of prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery, which generally align with the three timeframes (before, during and after) associated with an incident.

Within each of the five fact sheets, the REMS TA Center

  • Describes the mission area and how it connects to the other preparedness missions;
  • Suggests safety, security, and emergency management activities, which together comprise preparedness, that planning teams may want to consider for each mission area and how to integrate those efforts into their emergency operations plan (EOP); and
  • Focuses on a specific hazard to demonstrate how activities can be integrated into preparedness efforts, including the creation, review, or revision of an EOP using the six-step planning process described in the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans (School Guide):
    • Prevention—Infectious diseases
    • Protection—Tornadoes
    • Mitigation—Earthquakes
    • Response—Building fires
    • Recovery—Floods
